Belizeans consumer confidence drops in April 2026 as economic outlook weaken

By Zoila Palma:  Belize’s Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) declined in April 2026, reflecting growing caution among households about both current and future economic conditions. The index fell to 44.0, down 3.7 percent from 45.7 in March 2026, continuing a downward trend observed since the start of the year.

The overall decline was driven mainly by weaker sentiment in two key components of the index. The ‘Expectations’ component recorded the sharpest drop, falling 7.7 percent from 54.6 to 50.4, as consumers expressed reduced optimism about the economy and household finances over the next 12 months.

The ‘Present’ component also slipped by 5.0 percent, moving from 43.2 to 41.0, indicating increased pessimism about current economic conditions compared to the previous year.

But, sentiment toward major household purchases showed modest improvement.

The ‘Durable Goods’ component rose by 3.3 percent, increasing from 39.3 in March to 40.6 in April, suggesting slightly reduced reluctance toward big-ticket spending despite broader economic concerns.

At the district level, consumer confidence declined in most areas, with Stann Creek recording the steepest drop of 14.1 percent, falling from 51.9 to 44.6.

Belize District was the only area to report an improvement, with confidence rising 4.4 percent from 44.5 to 46.5, supported by gains across all three components of the index, including better sentiment on current conditions, future expectations, and durable goods purchases.
