By Horace Palacio: Belize’s biggest problem is not the government, not the economy, not even crime. It is the mindset of too many of our people. The way we think, the way we react, and the way we tear each other down is what keeps this country from moving forward.
Look around. The moment a senator declares his assets are worth over twenty million dollars, the first reaction is not curiosity or inspiration; it’s condemnation. Instead of asking, “How did he do it? What can I learn from that success?” we jump to jealousy and judgment. That’s not progress. That’s small thinking. A country that punishes success will never create more of it.
The same thing happens when someone shares new ideas. Instead of engaging or debating, people dismiss it and say, “ChatGPT wrote that.” As if intelligence or creativity is something foreign to us. We shoot the messenger instead of listening to the message. That’s the mentality that keeps Belize stuck: not poverty, not politics, but pride mixed with ignorance.
And when someone says we should want the government to succeed because if the government wins, the country wins, people shout, “Never!” That is madness. Do you realize what that means? It means you’d rather see Belize fail than see someone else succeed. That’s not patriotism, that’s poison.
Now, the United Democratic Party seems to be finding unity again, and that’s a good thing. A strong opposition is healthy for democracy. Belize cannot function without accountability, debate, and checks on power. When both sides are strong and focused, the country benefits. We need balance, not blind loyalty.
But at the end of the day, no party, no politician, and no policy can fix Belize if the people themselves refuse to change. Too many Belizeans complain daily yet do nothing to build solutions. Too many see the glass half empty, never half full. The truth is, if you think Belize is terrible, maybe you need perspective. Go live in Cuba, North Korea, or Somalia, where freedom barely exists, and then come back and tell me how bad Belize is. People in those countries would give anything to live here, to have opportunity, to have peace, to have a voice.
We have it better than we think. But instead of gratitude, too many of us choose negativity. Instead of building, we break down. Instead of thinking big, we gossip small. The world is moving forward, and Belize cannot keep dragging itself back with excuses, jealousy, and division.
Belize will never rise until we fix the mindset that celebrates failure and attacks success. We must stop tearing down the people who try to do something different. We must stop waiting for the government to save us and start taking responsibility for ourselves.
The day Belizeans stop hating success, stop mocking intelligence, and stop fighting progress is the day this country will truly rise.
