Belizean Women Entrepreneurs gain Intellectual Property skills through MentHERship workshops

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Intellectual Property Office (BELIPO), in partnership with the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) and the Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT), hosted two CARIFORUM Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation (CarIPI) II MentHERship: Women@Work workshops to help women entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses through greater awareness and practical use of intellectual property (IP).

The workshops were held on September 23 in Belmopan and September 24 in Punta Gorda, Toledo. Participants learned about different forms of IP, including trademarks, patents, industrial designs, trade secrets and copyright, while exploring how these protections can support branding, product development, commercialization and expansion into new markets.

The interactive sessions also included IP asset mapping and the Business Model Canvas, allowing participants to identify valuable IP within their businesses, consider areas requiring protection and explore opportunities for commercialization and international expansion.

Experiences shared by women entrepreneurs highlighted the practical business value of IP, while participants also received guidance on identifying potential infringement and protecting their rights.

The sessions form part of CarIPI II’s Annual Work Plan 2, which aims to strengthen the practical use of IP systems across CARIFORUM Member States.
