By Aaron Humes: A local healthcare worker is seeking justice after falling prey to a fraudulent scheme involving a promised U.S. visa.
Back in March the complainant’s co-worker allegedly offered to assist her in obtaining a U.S. visa. Trusting her colleague, she transferred $455 her bank account via online banking, believing this payment was for the visa application process.
In a second transaction, the complainant handed her colleague an additional $50 in cash on April 9, for an invitation letter intended for her common-law husband. The colleague subsequently provided the complainant with a visa appointment date for July 28.
However, upon arriving at the U.S. Embassy on the scheduled date, the complainant discovered that no appointment had been made in her name. Concerned, she reached out to her colleague, who then claimed that the appointment had been rescheduled to August 29. A follow-up inquiry with the embassy confirmed there was still no appointment registered under her name.
Despite multiple attempts to contact the scammer for clarity and to retrieve her funds, she found herself blocked on WhatsApp, leaving her without any recourse.
Police investigation continues and investigators are seeking to locate the accused scammer.
