Davia Richardson
By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean swimmer Davia Richardson has officially earned a spot at the 2025 Junior Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay, following her impressive performance at the MR LIAC Speedo Long Island Challenge, held from April 25-27 in East Meadow, New York. Richardson secured her qualification with a 1:05.35 finish in the 100m freestyle, marking a significant milestone for Belizean swimming.
Competitive swimming is not officially practiced in Belize, limiting opportunities for athletes to train and compete at a high level. However, Richardson, who studies and trains in the United States, benefits from elite coaching, world-class facilities, and regular competition against strong opponents, allowing her to refine her skills and push her limits. She recently committed to Loyola University Maryland.
Richardson is also working toward qualification in two additional events. She aims to trim her 50m freestyle time from 27.78 to 27.69 and improve her 100m butterfly from 1:05.30 to 1:05.01. Her recent competitions demonstrate her growing strength in the pool, including her participation in the XXXVIII Carifta Championship, held from April 19-22 in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.
Richardson has consistently delivered strong performances in international competitions. At the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in 2024, she set a new national record in the 50m freestyle with a time of 26.60, and in the 100m butterfly with 1:03.72. Her ability to compete at this level highlights her potential to excel at the Junior Pan American Games.
Scheduled for August 2025, the Junior Pan American Games will feature top young athletes from across the Americas in a range of sports. Richardson’s qualification holds great significance for Belizeans, who will be cheering her on as she competes among the region’s best.
