By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a momentous achievement for Belizean martial arts, Silvino Riverol has become the first Belizean-born and Belizean-resident to earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu (BJJ). Riverol shared the news on his social media, expressing his profound gratitude and excitement.

On Friday, December 13, 2024, Riverol was awarded his black belt under the tutelage of Professor Jeremy Mahon at War Training Center in Tomball, Texas, United States.

“Friday 13th, 2024 will forever be one of the greatest days of my life. I earned my black belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu under Professor Jeremy Mahon, and I’m truly honored to now be part of this Elite Group of Gorillas/Professors,” Riverol said, reflecting on his achievement.

Riverol’s journey to this prestigious rank has been marked by dedication and perseverance. He thanked God for the blessings in his life and acknowledged the support of his family, particularly his wife and children, who have stood by him throughout his training. He also expressed gratitude to the black belts who were present during his promotion, noting their role in pushing him to achieve greatness.

“I’m truly honored to be the first Belizean-born, Belizean-resident BJJ Blackbelt,” Riverol said. “It’s truly a historic occasion and it’s the beginning of a new journey in my martial arts life.”

Riverol began his BJJ journey at Elite MMA in Houston, Texas, in February 2016, as a white belt and has since trained extensively, both in Belize and Texas. He has been training at the WAR Training Center in Tomball, Texas, and at the WAR Training Center Orange Walk Belize, where he is the head coach and owner. He gave special thanks to Professors Mahon and Renan Chavez for their guidance and for welcoming him into their lineage of warriors.

This achievement not only marks a personal triumph for Riverol but also represents a significant milestone for the martial arts community in Belize. As the sport of Brazilian Jiujitsu continues to grow in the country, Riverol’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration to aspiring martial artists.
