By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hernan Zetina, the Technical Director of Quarantine, along with Zoe Roberson Zetina, Managing Director of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), is currently in Taiwan participating in a Plant and Animal Health Quarantine course for managers.
Organized and funded by the International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) of Taiwan, the training involves 32 officials from 21 countries across Africa, the Middle East, South America, and Central America.
The course aims to share Taiwan’s expertise in policy development, regulations, and biosecurity protocols at points of entry to safeguard its agriculture from pests and diseases.
Participants will have the opportunity to exchange experiences regarding their own biosecurity implementations and the challenges they face.
Each participant is required to present their country’s quarantine system, culminating in a final group presentation focused on enhancing advocacy for animal and plant quarantine systems.
In addition to the training, the BAHA team will meet with Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to discuss the exportation of Belizean shrimp.
The FDA is currently conducting a risk assessment for shrimp imports from Belize and plans to visit in late October 2024 for site assessments of facilities interested in exporting marine products.
During this visit, the FDA will collaborate with BAHA, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Security (MAFSE), and other key industry stakeholders.
Both Taiwan and Belize are committed to finalizing the import requirements for shrimp by the end of the year, aiming to strengthen trade relations and ensure the safety of imported marine products.
