By Rubén Morales Iglesias: A team of young Belizean tennis players is proudly representing the Jewel at the CONTECA Circuit Tennis Tournament in Guatemala City this week, competing in the U10, U12, and U14 categories against top regional talent.
According to the Belize Tennis Association (BTA), the delegation includes Armaan Sugnani, Salim Espat, Jan Sosa, Johnny Habet, and Jay Paul Torres, under the guidance of Coach Ismar Amaya Torres. On Friday, August 22, Jay Paul Torres was given a rest day while the remaining players continued their matches on Day 3 of the tournament.
“This is an incredible opportunity for growth, experience, and showcasing Belizean talent on the regional stage,” the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA) said in a social media post earlier this week. The association has been actively sharing updates and encouragement for the athletes, emphasizing their pride in the team’s performance and sportsmanship.

The CONTECA Circuit is a key developmental event for junior players in Central America, offering exposure to high-level competition and fostering regional camaraderie.
“Wishing them strong matches, great experiences, and lots of growth as they compete against the region’s best,” BOCGA said, extending its best wishes to the athletes.
The tournament continues through the weekend, with Belize’s young players aiming to gain valuable experience and make their mark on the court.
