By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean forensic science student Abigail Marie Quiroz continues to blaze a trail in sports and academics, representing Belize in yet another competitive flag football tournament in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Quiroz, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminology, criminalistics, and forensic science at Instituto Wozniak, competed with her team Armadillos in the two-day Chetumal Bowl held on September 27–28. The tournament featured ten mixed-gender teams, including one from Cancún, battling it out in back-to-back matches, culminating in semifinals and medal presentations.
Though Armadillos didn’t advance to the semifinals, finishing with one win and two losses, Quiroz remains optimistic.
“We lost, sadly, this tournament, but we are hoping to bring our A-game for the next tournament happening in October,” she said. Wearing jersey #17, Quiroz played three positions—defensive back, offense, and wide receiver—displaying her versatility and commitment to the sport.
“This is my first year playing flag football,” Quiroz shared. “I love everything about it. I’m hoping I grow and learn another sport that isn’t played in my country.”

Hailing from San Ignacio in the Cayo District, Quiroz is the only Belizean currently active in Chetumal’s flag football scene. Her passion for sports was evident earlier this year when she helped Team Bakab Balam secure multiple podium finishes at the Verano Xul-Ha 2025 Multi-Sports Festival, including gold in volleyball and kayaking.
Quiroz’s journey from Belize to Mexico is driven by her dream of becoming a forensic pathologist. Her academic path was shaped by hands-on experiences in Belize, where she assisted forensic pathologists at crime scenes and observed autopsies. Now, she’s exploring scholarship opportunities to continue her medical studies.
Whether on the field or in the lab, Abigail Quiroz continues to represent Belize with pride and ambition—proving that borders are no barrier to Belizean excellence.
