By Zoila Palma: Farmers across Belize are being empowered to see agriculture not just as a tradition, but as a thriving business, thanks to the Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) program currently being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture.
On a recent visit to Concepcion Village in the Corozal District, ministry representatives met with Carlos Eck, a passionate farmer actively participating in SHEP trainings.
Eck cultivates a variety of crops including tomatoes, cabbage, onions, cilantro, carrots, and watermelon, and is embracing a more market-oriented approach to his farming practices.
The SHEP initiative is focused on helping farmers align their crop production with market demand, offering training in crop selection, marketing strategies, and data-driven decision-making. The goal is to increase productivity and income while promoting sustainable agriculture across the country.
“Mr. Eck’s success is a testament to the potential of Belizean farmers when given the right support and training. The Ministry remains committed to working alongside farmers to ensure that agriculture becomes a viable, competitive, and profitable business sector in Belize,” the Ministry noted.
