By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Belizean farmers concluded their visit to a farm owned by Cesar Jordan in Petén, Guatemala, that is producing white potatoes.
Farmers received a comprehensive view of the practices used in the planting, management and harvesting of Frito Lay 2312 variety of potato which is the variety that has been grown successfully on the farm in Peten.
The Frito Lay 2312 potato variety so far has demonstrated promising performance under Petén’s tropical climate and soil conditions.
Given the similarities between Petén’s environment and Belize’s, the Ministry of Agriculture is considering the importation of this variety for trial purposes.
These trials are a pre-requisite to assess the variety’s adaptability and productivity in Belize before encouraging farmers to make any significant investment.
As part of the tour, farmers attended a presentation by technical expert Eliar Yasmani Leon Martinez, who shared valuable insights on environmentally friendly market practices and innovations for potato farming.
The session also addressed common diseases and viruses that affect potato production, further equipping the Belizean farmers with greater knowledge to enhance their farms’ productivity and sustainability.
“This visit is the result of the succesfull cross-border agricultural collaboration that exists between Guatemala and Belize. Under this program, our farmers have benefitted significantly from exposure to new farming technologies, improving farming practices and fostering resilience,” the Ministry of Agriculture noted.
The Ministry of Agriculture says that it remains committed to facilitating these exchanges, ensuring that Belize’s agricultural sector continues to grow sustainably while embracing innovative solutions.
A total of 15 potato farmers from Belize participated in the tour which was facilitated by the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC) and the Ministry of Agriculture in Peten, Guatemala.
