By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Santander Sugar Group is celebrating a major milestone as three Belizean engineers take center stage in the construction and operation of the company’s new sugar refinery, now underway in western Belize. Working alongside two internationally seasoned engineers, each with more than 30 years of global experience, the Belizean team is playing a critical role in driving one of the country’s most ambitious agricultural and industrial projects.
Heading the refinery’s engineering efforts is Andre Gongora, a Belizean Chemical Engineer who serves as the Refinery Project Engineer for the Caribbean Sugar Refinery (CSR) at Santander. Gongora’s work places him at the heart of refinery design, development, and implementation, demonstrating the growing capacity of Belizean professionals in highly technical fields.
Joining him is Anijay “Ani” Quiroz, also a Belizean Chemical Engineer, who currently serves as Assistant Process Manager (Technical) at Santander’s Sugar Processing Plant. Quiroz is responsible for ensuring efficient operations during the grinding process and supporting refinery integration as the new facility moves toward completion.
Also leading the charge is Carlos Alvarez, a Belizean Mechanical Engineer who serves as Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the processing plant. Alvarez oversees machinery integrity and mechanical systems, ensuring the mill operates at peak performance while supporting the installation of new refinery infrastructure.
Together, these three Belizeans stand shoulder-to-shoulder with global experts Chris Mapfaira of Zimbabwe, a 32-year veteran in sugar manufacturing, and Trevor Endres of South Africa, a mechanical engineer with 40 years of experience across 12 countries. Their collaboration marks a significant moment for Belize’s engineering landscape, showcasing local talent at the forefront of national industrial development.
