By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarria beat five other riders to win Friday’s Stage 5 of La Vuelta Ciclística Independencia Nacional in the Dominican Republic. Chavarria and the five other riders got away and never relinquished the lead, beating the peloton by approximately two minutes and 30 seconds. The stage covered 147.7 kilometers (92.3 miles). The six worked together, sharing the lead in an effort to widen the gap. At one point, they led by over three minutes.
After four stages, Chavarria was seventh in the U23 Category, 32nd in the general classification, and 16th in the points competition, having topped the U23 category in Stages 2 and 4. He was also seventh overall in Stage 2 and eight in Stage 4. In those two stages, he finished with the same time as the winners.
He will surely improve those standings after today’s historic race.
