By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Derrick Chavarria is currently in a six-man getaway in Friday’s Stage 5 of La Vuelta Ciclística Independencia Nacional in the Dominican Republic. The stage covers 147.7 kilometers (92.3 miles). The six are working together, sharing the lead in an effort to widen the gap. At 10:25 am, they were leading by 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
Currently, Chavarria is seventh in the U23 Category, 32nd in the general classification, and 16th in the points competition, having topped the U23 category in Stages 2 and 4. He was also seventh overall in Stage 2 and eight in Stage 4. In those two stages, he finished with the same time as the winners.
After the fourth stage, Chavarria was 32nd with a combined time of 10 hours, 38 minutes, and 22 seconds, 9:28 behind Spaniard Oscar Sevilla of Colombian Team Medellín who leads the general classification. Sevilla’s time was 10 hours, 28 minutes and 54 seconds.
In the Under 23 Category, Chavarria was seventh overall, two minute behind leader Santiago Cardona of the HYF Sport Wear team.
In the points competition, Chavarria gained eight points on Thursday. He is 16th with 17 points. The points leader is Alberto Ramos with 35 points.
His team, Cayman Phoenix International is 12th. Medellín is still the leading team with a time of 31 hours, 26 minutes and 8 seconds. Phoenix International has 32 hours, 16 seconds, that’s 34 minutes and 8 seconds behind.
