By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s rising star Derrick Chavarria delivered a career-defining performance on Saturday morning, claiming gold in the Under-23 category at the 2025 Caribbean Elite Road Cycling Championship Individual Time Trial. Racing on home soil, Chavarria clocked 0:54:15.00 over the 32.5-kilometer course the Burrell Boom-Hattieville Road in the Belize District, averaging 44.1 km/h and placing 7th overall among the Elite Men.
This victory marks a major leap for the young Belizean, who finished second in the U23 division last year in Georgetown, Guyana. His triumph not only secures his first Caribbean title but also affirms his status as one of the region’s most promising talents.
Chavarria’s performance outpaced his U23 contenders, including Aaron Newton of Guyana and Barron Musgrove of Bahamas, by seven and 12 minutes. They, along with 4th place Feliz Neely of the Bahamas couldn’t match the Belizean’s consistency and pacing.
Belizean Pride on Display
Chavarria’s win adds to Team Belize’s growing reputation in regional cycling. With Cory Williams finishing fourth overall in the Elite category, Belize now boasts podium-level talent across both senior and youth divisions.
With his eyes now set on Sunday’s road race, Chavarria will look to build on his momentum and continue inspiring Belize’s next generation of cyclists.
