Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarría wins Green Jersey at Tour of Chiriquí

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 🚴 🇧🇿 Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarría capped off an outstanding week at the 45th Tour of Chiriquí in Panama by winning the coveted Green Jersey as points leader, finishing 2nd in the U23 category and 6th overall in the final general classification.

Riding for Panamanian squad TaG Cycling, Chavarría showcased consistency and strength across the eight demanding stages of the regional classic. His performance began with a podium finish in Stage 1, where he sprinted to second place behind Costa Rica’s Pablo Mudarra in the David–San Félix–Las Lomas opener.

Stage 8 Results

The final stage, a 77.2 km closed circuit in Barrio Bolívar, saw Chavarría place 3rd, securing the U23 victory for the stage and earning 15 points to clinch the points classification. His teammates from Belize also completed the race:

  • Jaylen Briceño — 40th in Stage 8, 10th in U23, and 38th overall
  • Jyven Gonzalez — 54th in Stage 8, 47th overall

The Cycling Federation of Belize congratulated the trio, stating:

A Demanding Tour

The Tour of Chiriquí, held from November 21–28, featured eight stages testing endurance and tactical skill:

  • Stage 1: David – San Félix – Las Lomas (140.8 km)
  • Stage 2: Volcán Closed Circuit – 15 laps of 5.5 km (82.5 km)
  • Stage 3: David Sur Closed Circuit – 20 laps of 4.1 km (82.0 km)
  • Stage 4: David – Finca Blanco – La Concepción (137.1 km)
  • Stage 5: David – Gariche – Solano – Volcán (101.0 km)
  • Stage 6: David – San Andrés Entrance – San Pablo – Potrerillos – La Chancleta (126.8 km)
  • Stage 7: Individual Time Trial – Punta Tierra (19.3 km)
  • Stage 8: Barrio Bolívar TELCA Closed Circuit – 20 laps of 3.86 km (77.2 km)

Looking Ahead

With the Tour of Chiriquí concluded, Chavarría and Briceño now turn their focus to the Tour of Costa Rica, where they will continue to represent Belize against some of the region’s strongest riders.
