Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarría shines in Dominican Republic’s National Independence Tour

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarría has been making waves in the 7-stage Dominican Republic’s National Independence Tour.
On Saturday, he is competing in Stage 6 after clinching a stunning victory in Stage 5 on Friday, riding for Phoenix International Cayman. Derrick completed the 147.2 km stage in 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 22 seconds, with a breakaway group of six. Emilio Pérez of team City Bikes Miami and Anderson Aracena of Verrazano/Santiago followed closely behind. This marks Chavarría’s first stage win in the tour, and with previous successes in the U23 category in Stages 2 and 4, it’s a notable achievement for the Belizean rider.

After five stages, Chavarría has climbed to 23rd in the overall standings, with a cumulative time of 14 hours, 1 minute, and 34 seconds, 8 minutes and 13 seconds behind the leader, Oscar Sevilla of Spain, from Colombian Team Medellín. As Chavarría competes in the 117.8-km Stage 6 today, excitement builds for the tour’s conclusion tomorrow.
