By Aaron Humes: Belizeans are feeling more upbeat about the economy and their spending per the Statistical Institute of Belize, which recorded a near 8 point swing in the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) in March, taking it back to near 50 percent.
The national Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) rose from 46 to 49.6 in March 2025, an increase of 3.6 points or 7.8 percent. Particularly, consumers are becoming increasingly optimistic about making substantial household purchases.
Sentiment regarding households’ current financial situations saw a 6.7 percent increase, climbing from 45.7 in February to 48.7 in March. Additionally, optimism about future financial conditions surged by 5.7%, with the Expectations component rising from 55.4 to 58.5.
One of the most significant shifts was observed in the Durable Goods component, which jumped from 37.0 in February to 41.6 in March, indicating a decrease in pessimism by 12.3 percent. This suggests that consumers are now more willing to invest in major purchases, contributing positively to economic sentiment.
Residents of the Stann Creek District are particularly bullish experiencing a remarkable 19 percent increase in consumer confidence. The CCI for this district increased from a low of 46.9 in February to an optimistic 55.9 in March. Notably, the Durable Goods component in Stann Creek saw the most substantial improvement, skyrocketing by 41 percent from 36.3 to 51.2.
Conversely, the Toledo district reported the smallest uplift, with the CCI only rising by 1.6 percent from 50.6 to 51.4. Despite a decline in the Durable Goods component, residents expressed heightened optimism about their future, evidenced by a 6.9 percent increase in the Expectations component.
Regional analysis revealed a similar pattern, with both urban and rural consumers exhibiting improved confidence. Urban areas reported a 6.4 percent increase in sentiment, rising from 44.4 to 47.3. Urban consumers were particularly less pessimistic regarding major purchases, with the Durable Goods component climbing from 36.7 to 41.1.
