By Aaron Humes: Belizean security forces successfully intercepted a suspected narco-flight on the evening of Friday, April 10, leading to the confiscation of over 551 kilograms of cocaine and the arrest of two Mexican nationals believed to be pilots of the aircraft.
The operation, which unfolded in the Neuland area of the Corozal District, was the culmination of extensive intelligence work and collaboration among various law enforcement agencies. Utilizing live surveillance feeds from partner nations, authorities tracked the aircraft as it departed from South America, prompting a coordinated three-phased operation involving surveillance of known landing sites, followed by the deployment of specialized units to key locations.
When the aircraft landed in Neuland at approximately 6:14 p.m., law enforcement swiftly moved in, seizing the plane, its illicit cargo, the detained pilots, and two Belizean nationals who were also found in the vicinity at the time of the raid.
The Ministry statement advised that “the Ministry has not made all information public at this time, as a parallel investigation has been launched to determine the major players involved in this foiled shipment, and in the ongoing transshipment of narcotics. Through strengthened law enforcement, enhanced local and regional cooperation and comprehensive prevention strategies, we will continue to confront these threats head on.”
The operation was coordinated by the Joint Intelligence Operation Centre (JIOC), along with specialized units of the Belize Police Department, Belize Defence Force, Belize Coast Guard and the Customs Department. Its success reaffirms the Government of Belize’s unwavering commitment to dismantling drug networks and organized crime.
In an earlier incident, investigators uncovered aviation fuel in the Bomba area, believed to be related to the operation. This fuel discovery is part of a broader investigation that connects local activities to an ongoing drug network operating within a nearby Mennonite community.
