Belizean athletes compete in 8 disciplines at 12th Central American Games in Guatemala Thursday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize begins its campaign today at the 12th Central American Games in Guatemala, with athletes competing in eight disciplines: judo, beach volleyball, tennis, men’s softball, swimming, road cycling, fencing, and men’s volleyball.

In swimming, Davia Richardson proudly represents Belize in the aquatics arena.

Belize will also be competing in road cycling and fencing on Friday. The Belize Cycling Team features Cory Williams, Oscar Quiroz, Jyven Gonzalez, Justin Williams, Derrick Chavarria, and Jaylen Briceño, all set to represent the country on the road.

On the tennis courts, Nazlie Williams, Richard Huang, and Samron Pott, under the guidance of coach Ismar Amaya Torres, carry Belize’s banner with determination. Huang faces Daniel Cáceres of Honduras at 9:00 a,m, followed by Williams’ match against Honduras’ Isabella Álvarez at 10:30 am.

Men’s softball action bats off at 9:00 am at the Carlos Cano Stadium in Guatemala City, where Belize takes on Panama in a highly anticipated matchup.

Beach volleyball sees Belize facing Honduras twice today, with matches scheduled for 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, as the team seeks to build momentum in the sand.

In judo, Belize’s trio of male athletes—Marcello Salam (-60kg), Michael Ortiz (-66kg), and Ishmael Castro (-90kg)—successfully completed weigh-in and uniform inspection (judogi control) on Thursday, meeting all competition requirements. In the first round, Salam faces Luis Montes of Nicaragua, Ortiz takes on Gabriel Garcia of Honduras, and Castro meets Christian Artola of Nicaragua.

In fencing, Belize is represented by Luis Preston, Jahiem Hope, and Christian Hope. The team is under the guidance of coach Frank McKenzie as they prepare to take on regional rivals in Guatemala City.

Men’s volleyball also gets underway today, with Belize facing Honduras at 4:00 p.m. at the Gimnasio Teodoro Palacios Flores.

Out of the 16 disciplines in which Belize will compete at the 12th Central American Games, nine delegations are already present in Guatemala. These include men’s softball, men’s and women’s volleyball, tennis, judo, aquatics, fencing, cycling, beach volleyball, and athletics—part of the broader field of 55 sports featured at this year’s regional event.
