By Horace Palacio: A Belizean man and a Guatemalan woman were arrested in Melchor de Mencos, Peten, following a raid that uncovered illegal weapons, suspected ecstasy pills, and smuggled cigarettes, Guatemalan police said on Thursday.
The suspects, identified as Nydia “N”, 42, and Matherw “N”, 47, were apprehended during a joint operation by the Guatemalan National Civil Police (PNC).
Authorities seized two unlicensed pistols, various calibers of ammunition, 632 pills suspected to be ecstasy, and 60,000 units of smuggled cigarettes. A pick-up truck with Belizean plates was also impounded.
The arrests underscore the ongoing battle against cross-border criminal activity between Belize and Guatemala, particularly in the trafficking of illegal firearms and drugs. The suspects are now facing multiple charges, including illegal firearm possession, drug trafficking, and smuggling.
