By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belizean-American sales representative Dwight Anthony Arthurs has avoided jail time but was fined a total of $1,945 and disqualified from holding or obtaining a Belize driver’s license for one year after crashing his vehicle into a hot dog stand earlier this month.

Arthurs, who spent three nights in lockdown following his arraignment, was sentenced on Thursday, February 19, 2026. Although several persons were reportedly injured during the incident, no charges relating to the injuries were levied against him.

At his initial arraignment, Arthurs pleaded guilty to four traffic offenses: driving without due care and attention; failing to report an accident; failing to stop and render aid; and failing to affix a registration plate.

He was fined $105 for driving without due care and attention, payable by February 27, 2026, in default two weeks imprisonment. For failing to report the accident, he was fined $805, payable by March 31, 2026, in default three months imprisonment. He was fined $30 for failing to affix a registration plate, and the highest fine of $1,005 was imposed for failing to stop and render aid, payable by April 30, 2026, in default three months imprisonment.

The charges stem from an incident on Saturday, February 7, 2026, when a 54-year-old businessman of West Canal, Belize City, reported that around 8:12 p.m., a dark red heavily tinted Ford Taurus made a turn at the intersection of Mosul Street and Cemetery Road before proceeding toward Euphrates Avenue, where his food stall was located.

According to vendor, the vehicle made a wide turn directly toward his stall at the corner of Cemetery Road and Euphrates Avenue, striking several persons and completely damaging his food stand, valued at $1,500. The vehicle then sped off into Euphrates Avenue. Ponce reported that the car bore no visible license plate and that due to the heavy tint, he could not identify the driver.

One of the injured persons, identified as a 62-year-old accountant of the Kings Park area, sustained abrasions to his right arm and leg. He was transported to the hospital for medical attention. Police issued medico-legal forms, but the vehicle had fled the scene before a sketch plan could be drawn.

Investigations continued, and on Friday, February 13, 2026, traffic police on patrol observed a maroon 2016 Ford Taurus parked on King Street matching the description of the vehicle involved. The car was found without a license plate displayed, and officers observed recent repairs to the driver’s side.

Further checks led police to an apartment at #55 Albert Street, where Arthurs identified himself as the owner of the vehicle. The keys to the car were found in his possession. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of license plate BCC-76640 inside by Scenes of Crime personnel.

Arthurs was detained and later formally charged.

He will now be off the road for one year as part of his sentence.
