By Breaking Belize News Staff: Broadway made history last night, and so did a proud daughter of Belize. American actress Kara Young, born to two Belizean parents, became the first Black performer to win back-to-back Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
Young received this year’s award for her stirring portrayal of Aziza in the critically acclaimed production Purpose. Her performance has been described as fearless, heart-wrenching, and revolutionary.
Just one year ago, Young took home the same award for a different role, making her back-to-back win a milestone not just for her, but for the entire theatre industry.
Broadway Black, a leading platform amplifying Black artists, celebrated her achievement with the words: “Kara Young just made history tonight… the first Black performer ever to win back-to-back Tonys!”
