By Breaking Belize News Staff: Gilbert Anthony Graham Jr. has been committed to stand trial in the High Court on a manslaughter by negligence charge stemming from a June 2025 traffic accident that claimed the life of his 18-year-old friend, Triston Omarion Ortiz.
Graham, a Belizean-American technician from Las Vegas, Nevada, was represented by attorney Ellis Arnold when his Preliminary Inquiry concluded by way of paper committal.
The prosecution submitted more than 15 witness statements and police reports along with more than a dozen documentary exhibits. Graham did not provide a list of witnesses when asked by the court.
He has now been committed to stand trial during the January 2027 session of the High Court.
The charge arose from a fatal traffic accident in Maskall Village on June 22, 2025.
Police reported that at around 5:00 a.m., Graham was driving a grey Toyota Hilux pickup from west to east through the village with Ortiz as a passenger.
Upon approaching the Old Belize River Bridge, Graham allegedly misjudged the bridge and collided with the left-side railing. The pickup then went over the edge and landed on the riverbank.
Ortiz was reportedly flung from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries. Villagers transported him toward medical assistance before he was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police subsequently investigated the crash and obtained a urine specimen from Graham.
Graham must now answer to the manslaughter by negligence charge before the High Court next year.
