By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Belizean citizen is calling for an official review after alleging that he and his boyfriend were subjected to discriminatory remarks by an immigration officer while crossing the western border into Guatemala.
According to a public social media post, the incident occurred while the couple was traveling through the border crossing. The individual claims that Immigration Officer M. Vernon made comments that were offensive and discriminatory because of their sexual orientation.
The complainant described the experience as humiliating and disappointing, arguing that public officers should treat all members of the public with professionalism, respect and impartiality regardless of personal characteristics or beliefs.
The situation reportedly escalated when the individual’s sister raised concerns about the officer’s alleged comments. According to the post, she was met with what was described as disrespectful treatment and threats that police would be called despite the family fully complying with immigration procedures.
The individual also expressed disappointment that an apology reportedly requested from the officer was not directed toward the persons who allegedly experienced the discriminatory remarks.
The allegations have since generated discussion online, with many Belizeans weighing in on the importance of professionalism among public officers and equal treatment for all citizens.
At the time of publication, Belize Immigration officials have not publicly commented on the allegations.
