Belize Zoo becomes a classroom for young conservationists

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Students from St Martin de Porres School traded their classroom for the Belize Zoo last week, spending a morning learning about conservation through games, interactive booths and hands on activities.

The event took place ahead of the evening celebration of Voices of the Corridor, which marked the completion of a key link in the Maya Forest Corridor.

Students explored aquatic ecosystems with the Savanna Field Station and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). They learned about the work of conservation rangers and field enforcement with WCS and Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, and got a closer look at biodiversity monitoring through camera trapping and bird observation.

Other booths focused on the dangers of fire and how teams protect the Maya Forest Corridor, as well as the role of sustainable agriculture in keeping landscapes healthy. Those activities were led by WCS, the Belize Maya Forest Trust, the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation, the Savanna Field Station and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum and Mining.

Organizers said the day gave students an introduction to the people, knowledge and daily work behind conservation in Belize.
