By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Women’s Seaweed Farmers Association (BWSFA) has launched a new initiative, “Empowering BWSFA: Strengthening Sustainable Seaweed Mariculture,” with support from the UK Government’s Blue Social Challenge Fund.

The £100,000 project aims to boost Belize’s blue economy by advancing sustainable seaweed farming, creating economic opportunities, and improving environmental resilience.

BWSFA President Jalima Gold expressed gratitude for the trust and support of the British High Commission in advancing the seaweed mariculture sector.

British High Commissioner Christine Rowlands said, “We are happy to continue our partnership with BWSFA; through the Blue Social Challenge Fund; this project will empower local communities to develop Belize’s blue economy, grow its mariculture sector and continue to build climate resilience.”

BWSFA President Jalima Gold stated, “We are deeply grateful for the trust placed in us by the British High Commission, Belmopan, to pilot the Blue Social Challenge Fund. Their ongoing support is pivotal to advancing our efforts in building Belize’s seaweed mariculture industry — a cornerstone of our nation’s blue economy potential in the Caribbean. This investment will create a lasting and transformative impact.”

The project will provide training in skills like boat navigation and seaweed-based product development, expand seaweed farms, and establish a mobile processing facility to improve marketing and packaging.

Additionally, the initiative will foster community engagement through ecotourism opportunities and increase awareness of sustainable practices.

The project is expected to empower local communities, enhance market competitiveness, and strengthen marine ecosystems.

BWSFA’s previous achievements, including training boat captains and processing over 17,000 pounds of seaweed, lay a strong foundation for future growth.
