By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) are playing the first of a pair of friendly matches against the Cuba Women’s National Team (CWNT) in Havana, Cuba, today (Thursday, 15 August 2024) at 4:00 pm (2:00 pm Belize time) at the Pedro Marrero Stadium in Havana.

The team travelled to Cuba on Monday for the friendlies, which are being held in preparation for the Concacaf Women’s Championship, League B, that will be held next year.

The BWNT conducted a training session at the Havana stadium on Wednesday.

“We take this opportunity to wish the team the very best in their official international friendly. Let’s go Belize,” the Football Federation of Belize said in a social media post on the Havana visit.

The second match against the Cuba Women’s National Team will be held at the same venue on Sunday, 18 August, but the time hasn’t yet been confirmed. Initially, the FFB had said the match would kick off at 4:00 pm (2:00 pm Belize time).

“I think they are going to give us a good match, a good test, and given that we are going to play other teams in the higher league next year, it’s best for us to begin to start testing the waters, for us to be in a better position to play next year,” BWNT Head Coach Wayne Casimiro said in an FFB interview.

Last month, the BWNT split a couple of friendly matches with Bermuda, winning the first one 2-0 on Thursday, July 11, on a brace by captain Sabrina Eiley, but falling by the same score on Sunday, July 14, at the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) Stadium in Belmopan.

Currently, Cuba are ranked 92nd  in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking, ahead of both Bermuda (144th) and Belize (169th). At the Concacaf level, Cuba hold the 13th rank, Bermuda 19th, and Belize 25th.

However, in the Concacaf Women’s Championship National Team Ranking, released on March 11, 2024, the three countries are one behind the other; Cuba are ranked 13th, Bermuda 14th, and Belize 15th.

The following is the list of 21 players who travelled to Cuba.
