By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Cuba Women’s National Team in an official friendly match on Thursday at the Pedro Marrero Stadium in Havana, Cuba.
Eunises Núñez opened the scoring and Indira Hechevarría converted the second, the Cuba Football Association (AFC) reported on Thursday.
When a friendly match is deemed official, the performance of both teams is considered for the FIFA and Concacaf rankings. Both teams are engaging in these friendly matches as preparation for the Concacaf Women’s Championship, which will be held next year.
Belize will play the higher-ranked Cubans again on Sunday at 5:00 pm (3:00 pm Belize time).
Thursday’s match marked the third friendly game the BWNT has played since last month when they faced Bermuda twice at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. The BWNT secured a 2-0 victory in the first match on Thursday, July 11, with Captain Sabrina Eiley netting both goals. However, they lost 2-0 in the second match on Sunday, July 14.
