By Horace Palacio: A young woman with a history of serious medical conditions drowned in the Mopan River in western Belize on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim, 20-year-old Kayla Hernandez, had been battling leukemia and kidney failure. She was found unresponsive in a shallow section of the river near Calla Creek Village, Cayo District by her aunt, Lilian Hernandez.

Emergency responders transported Hernandez to the San Ignacio Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities do not suspect foul play, but a post-mortem examination is pending to determine the official cause of death.
