By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Under-19 Men’s National Volleyball Team faced challenges in the U-19 Men’s Central American Volleyball Championship not being able to repeat the bronze medal it achieved the last time, securing only one win and finishing in sixth place out of seven teams. However, showed a lot of promise with David Garbutt winning two individual awards while Lawrence Mahler and Orion Butler earning the other two.
Despite these difficulties, Belizean players shone individually in the tournament held at the FESAVOL Gymnasium in San Salvador, El Salvador. Garbutt earned the titles of Best Libero and Best Defender, showcasing his exceptional defensive skills. Mahler was named Best Setter, and Butler claimed the award for 1st Best Blocker award. These achievements highlight the individual talent and potential within the team.
Belize’s sole victory came in their final match against Honduras, when they triumphed 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22). This win placed them in the sixth position with a 1-5 record, while Honduras finished in seventh place without any victories.

After a challenging start in their final match against the Hondurans, Belize made necessary adjustments, excelling in blocking and effectively countering their opponent’s strategies. Hayden Requena led the offensive effort with 19 points, while Daniel Musa and Lebron Baizar scored 16 points each. Butler adder 12. Nelson Valladares was the standout for Honduras with 13 points.
“The tournament was very difficult for us, unable to find the path to victory until the last game,” Belize’s head coach Yamill Herrera said reflected on the team’s performance.
“In the match against Honduras, we had a stable performance; our tactical serve combined very well with our blocking, and that was the key to the match.”
The Belize team’s potential and dedication were evident, and the individual awards highlight the skill and talent present in Belizean volleyball.
