By Zoila Palma: The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic (BWRC) has shared the remarkable recovery story of a Furrowed Wood Turtle rescued from the streets of Belmopan after enduring a severe shell injury for months.
The turtle was found crossing a busy road when a passerby noticed her plastron — the underside of her shell — bore an old, untreated fracture, likely caused by a vehicle accident.
Veterinarians at BWRC performed surgery to repair the damage, and after eight months of care, the turtle’s shell is slowly healing. While she is not yet ready to return to the wild, the clinic says she is safe, stable, and making steady progress.
The rescue highlights both the resilience of wildlife and the importance of compassion from ordinary citizens.
BWRC noted that the turtle’s survival was possible because someone stopped to help.
