By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A howler monkey that survived a severe New World screwworm infestation and spent months recovering in rehabilitation has died, according to the Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic.
The monkey, known as Georgie, was rescued last year after suffering extensive injuries caused by thousands of screwworm maggots. Wildlife specialists worked for months to stabilize and rehabilitate him, and after approximately nine months of treatment, Georgie appeared to have made a remarkable recovery.
Clinic officials said Georgie was eventually transferred into a rehabilitation setting where he resumed normal behaviors, including socializing with other monkeys and participating in howling sessions.
However, after spending about 10 months in rehabilitation, Georgie suddenly collapsed after experiencing seizures. Despite efforts to save him, he later died. Wildlife experts believe he may have suffered a stroke, although final necropsy results are still pending.
Staff members expressed sadness over the loss but noted that Georgie spent his final months surrounded by care, companionship, and opportunities to engage in natural behaviors.
The Belize Wildlife & Referral Clinic continues to provide treatment and rehabilitation for injured and displaced wildlife across the country.
