By Horace Palacio: The National Meteorological Service is warning Belizeans to prepare for a shift in the weather today as a prefrontal system moves across the country, bringing increased moisture, instability, and the potential for strong thunderstorms.
Rainfall began early this morning in southern Toledo, and showers are expected to gradually increase throughout the day. By afternoon and evening, inland and northern parts of the country will likely experience thunderstorms, which will then spread across most areas by nightfall.
A Strong Thunderstorm Watch is in effect. Forecasters say some storms could produce heavy rainfall, intense lightning, and damaging winds. Residents are advised to monitor conditions closely and to remain indoors during thunderstorms for their safety.
Marine conditions will also be impacted, with winds shifting to the north-northeast and gusts expected. Seas are forecast to become moderate to rough, and waves may reach heights of up to seven feet.
Temperatures remain high despite the overcast skies, with inland areas climbing to 93°F and the coast hovering around 87°F. Cooler temps are expected in hilly regions.
Looking ahead, cloudy skies and scattered rain will continue into Sunday, especially along coastal and offshore areas, before gradually easing by Sunday night.
Belizeans are urged to stay updated via official channels and take the necessary precautions.
