By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Tropical Storm Cristina has formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Central America, bringing heavy rain and potential flooding concerns to several neighboring countries. However, forecasters say Belize is not expected to experience any direct impacts from the storm.
According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Cristina developed Monday with maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. The storm was located west-northwest of Nicaragua and southeast of El Salvador as it moved through the Pacific basin.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued for portions of Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, where forecasters expect significant rainfall through Thursday.
Rainfall totals of four to eight inches are forecast across parts of Central America, with some areas potentially receiving up to 12 inches. Such amounts could trigger flash flooding, river flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions.
For Belize, however, the situation is much different.
Meteorologists continue to indicate that no tropical cyclone formation is expected in the Caribbean Sea near Belize during the next 48 hours. Current forecasts show Cristina remaining in the Pacific Ocean on the opposite side of the Central American landmass.
While Belize could continue experiencing its normal rainy season pattern, there is currently no indication that Tropical Storm Cristina will directly affect the country.
Belize’s National Meteorological Service continues to monitor all tropical systems closely as the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season progresses.
