Belize–Venezuela Solidarity Group condemns alleged attack on President Maduro

By Zoila Palma:  The Solidarity Group of Belize and Venezuela has issued a statement strongly condemning what it describes as an attack and capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, calling the alleged actions a serious violation of international law and fundamental human rights.

In its declaration, the group stated that such acts undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty and breach protections outlined in international legal frameworks, including the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The group emphasized the long-standing relationship between Belize and Venezuela, formally established in 1989, highlighting what it described as tangible benefits arising from bilateral cooperation.

These include access to affordable fuel through the Caracas Energy Agreement and later Petrocaribe, which, according to the statement, helped ease economic pressures on Belizean households.

The declaration also referenced Venezuela’s humanitarian support to Belize through Operación Milagro, a regional health initiative that provided free eye surgeries to Belizeans who could not otherwise afford treatment. The program was credited with restoring sight and improving quality of life for many recipients.

Beyond health and energy cooperation, the Solidarity Group pointed to cultural and educational initiatives, including the establishment of the Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Cooperation (IVCC) in Belmopan.

The institute has reportedly played a role in promoting cultural exchange, education, and solidarity between the two nations. Housing and social development projects were also cited as areas of collaboration.

The group also noted that Belize has supported Venezuela in regional forums such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), advocating for dialogue, peace, and respect for national sovereignty.

The statement referenced Prime Minister John Briceño’s 2022 visit to Caracas, which reaffirmed cooperation in trade, tourism, education, housing, and efforts to revitalize Petrocaribe.
