By Zoila Palma: Belize has officially launched its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0), a major step in the fight against climate change.
The launch, held on July 31, 2025, at Oasis Hidden Hall in Belmopan, was led by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, through the National Climate Change Office (NCCO).
Delivering the keynote address, Minister Orlando Habet underscored the shift from planning to implementation, stating, “We are moving beyond commitments on paper. We are operationalizing them.”
NDC 3.0 sets out ambitious national climate goals that strengthen both mitigation and adaptation strategies.
Highlights include a 63% increase in greenhouse gas removals through agriculture, forestry, and other land use (AFOLU); a target of 75% renewable energy in electricity generation by 2030; and the development of detailed resilience plans for land use, agriculture, energy, waste, and coastal protection.
The updated NDC also features expanded stakeholder involvement, a clear roadmap for implementation, and mechanisms for financing and monitoring progress.
This latest climate pledge positions Belize as a regional leader in sustainable development. With NDC 3.0, the country signals not only its dedication to reducing emissions but also its commitment to climate resilience.
