By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The ongoing U.S. government shutdown, now entering its sixth week, is creating chaos in the skies, and Belize’s tourism industry could soon feel the turbulence. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a 10% reduction in flight capacity at 40 major airports across the United States beginning today, due to widespread staffing shortages among air traffic controllers and TSA agents.

This reduction is expected to affect over 268,000 passengers daily and approximately 1,800 flights, leading to delays and cancellations that ripple across international destinations, including Belize’s Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE).

Airports directly connected to Belize such as Miami (MIA), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Houston (IAH), Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), and Los Angeles (LAX) are all on the FAA’s list of affected hubs. These airports serve as major gateways for flights from the U.S. to Belize, making potential disruptions almost inevitable for travelers heading to or from the country.

Belize tourism officials expressed concern, noting that flight reliability is key during the winter high season when thousands of North American tourists visit for diving, fishing, and cultural experiences. Travel operators in San Ignacio and Placencia report an uptick in calls from anxious travelers seeking rebooking options.

Airlines have started easing refund and rescheduling policies, while the FAA says the cuts will remain until staffing and safety conditions improve. With the U.S. shutdown showing no signs of resolution, Belizean tourism operators are bracing for potential losses during what should be one of the most profitable periods of the year.
