By Zoila Palma: The International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT Global) has announced the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) as the official sponsor of the 2026 Global Responsible Tourism Awards, a move that further elevates Belize’s profile as a leader in sustainable and community-focused tourism. The awards are hosted annually by ICRT Global at a ceremony held before World Travel Market in London and recognize organizations and destinations that deliver measurable and scalable solutions to challenges facing the tourism industry.
As sponsor of the 2026 awards, Belize will play a prominent role in promoting responsible tourism practices and supporting innovators from destinations around the world.
Minister of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler said the sponsorship reflects Belize’s long-standing commitment to ensuring tourism benefits local communities while protecting the country’s cultural and natural resources. He noted that responsible travel remains a national priority rooted in community partnership, cultural pride and environmental stewardship.
Professor Harold Goodwin, Founder of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism, welcomed the partnership, stating that Belize has consistently demonstrated that responsible tourism is about creating positive outcomes for both host communities and visitors. He said the country’s practical approach to sustainability aligns closely with the values of the Global Responsible Tourism Awards and expressed confidence in Belize’s role as a champion of the programme in 2026.
The announcement follows Belize’s hosting of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s 2026 Sustainable Tourism Conference in San Pedro, which brought together more than 300 delegates from 29 countries to discuss climate resilience, cultural preservation and sustainable development.
