By Breaking Belize News Staff: Minister of National Security, Energy and Ports Michel Chebat has announced plans for Belizean officials to visit El Salvador to examine strategies used by that country to combat gang violence.

Speaking during Sunday’s emergency police briefing, Chebat said the government hopes to engage directly with Salvadoran authorities to better understand the policies and operations that contributed to the country’s reduction in gang-related crime.

The announcement comes as Belize faces a surge in deadly shootings and internal gang disputes.

When questioned about the human rights controversies surrounding El Salvador’s security policies, Chebat acknowledged that the circumstances confronting the two countries are different.

He said Belize would not necessarily adopt the same measures or implement them to the same extent.

Instead, the government hopes to identify strategies that could be adapted to Belize’s own legal and social circumstances.

El Salvador’s security crackdown under President Nayib Bukele has been credited with significantly reducing gang violence, although human rights organizations have raised serious concerns about arbitrary detention, due process and the treatment of detainees.

The possibility of adopting similar approaches in Belize has previously been examined by Breaking Belize News.

Chebat did not announce a specific date for the proposed visit.
