Belize to launch temporary residency program for foreign investors

By Aaron Humes: The Briceño Administration has announced plans to introduce a temporary residency program designed specifically for foreign investors. This initiative, spearheaded by the Prime Minister’s Office, seeks to streamline bureaucratic processes and position Belize as a more competitive player in the regional market.

Officials have acknowledged long-standing concerns from investors regarding the difficulties faced when entering and operating in Belize. Narda Garcia, CEO of the Ministry of Investment, speaking with Channel 5 News, expressed the government’s intention to discuss and finalize the specifics of the residency program in an upcoming meeting.

“We have a meeting…to look at exactly what will be the requirements,” Garcia said. “However, I can tell you from a broad perspective that we have many investors [who] go through a lot coming into Belize. So, for example, we have investors that have BPO in Panama and then have a BPO in Belize, and they try to come in and they take them through the mill, so to speak. And that, we believe, is not conducive for investment. It’s not conducive for good business.”

Garcia emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for investors, rather than one that serves as a deterrent. “We are trying to facilitate that type of situation. And maybe later on we will know exactly what will be the requirements and how we will get to that, but that’s what we are trying to do,” she added.

Details regarding the specific requirements for the residency program are still being developed, but the underlying goal is clear: to make Belize a more appealing destination for foreign entrepreneurs and businesses.
