By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) will hold a significant national workshop on marine litter monitoring in Belize from October 23 to 25, 2024.
This event aims to unite representatives from the Government of Belize, monitoring agencies, and NGOs to establish standardized protocols for assessing marine litter and microplastics.
The workshop will culminate in the development of Belize’s inaugural National Marine Litter Monitoring Plan, a crucial step in tackling marine pollution that threatens the environment and local livelihoods.
The workshop is integral to Belize’s efforts to combat marine pollution, aligning with the National Marine Action Plan.
The newly adopted protocols will facilitate continuous data collection, allowing for better quantification of marine litter types and sources affecting the country’s marine ecosystems.
This data is vital for assessing risks to human health and biodiversity, and will inform key environmental policies, including the Single Use Plastic Phase-Out and Returnable Containers Act.
In conjunction with the workshop, a ‘Train the Trainers’ program will be implemented throughout October, offering hands-on training in coastal and riverine locations.
This initiative, in partnership with the Department of Environment, aims to empower local NGOs and agencies to enhance their monitoring capabilities.
By integrating marine litter monitoring with other environmental efforts, Belize is committed to a comprehensive strategy for protecting its marine ecosystems, ultimately fostering a healthier marine environment for all.
OCPP is funded by the UK government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) and is delivered by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) on behalf of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).
