By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize is preparing for one of the biggest expansions of domestic electricity generation in the country’s history.
Prime Minister John Briceño announced that Government and Belize Electricity Limited are moving ahead with plans for up to 120 megawatts of solar generation and 40 megawatts of battery storage by 2030.
The programme has financing support from the World Bank and Saudi Fund for Development.
Briceño said approximately US$127 million in financing has already been arranged.
In the shorter term, approximately 30 megawatts of new solar generation supported by five hour battery storage is expected to be installed by June 2027.
Those projects are expected to be spread across several areas of Belize.
The Prime Minister said the investments are intended to increase domestic generation, reduce Belize’s dependence on imported electricity and limit the need for expensive diesel generation.
Briceño acknowledged that recent load shedding has brought energy security to the forefront of national concerns.
Temporary mobile diesel generation providing another 20 megawatts is currently being commissioned under a six month arrangement between BEL and Belgium based Power Solutions N.V.
Briceño said the long term objective is clear: Belize must become less vulnerable to interruptions and price spikes in imported electricity.
