By Horace Palacio: In a significant step to enhance criminal investigations, Belize will soon acquire a state-of-the-art DNA testing machine. Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, confirmed the development, which aligns with the National Forensic Science Services (NFSS) recent call for DNA samples from volunteers.
“This upcoming fiscal year, we are securing a rapid DNA test analysis machine,” Minister Musa stated. “This will be a game-changer for our NFSS, significantly bolstering our investigative capabilities.”
Currently, DNA samples collected from crime scenes in Belize are sent abroad for analysis. The new machine will enable rapid, in-country DNA testing, potentially accelerating the identification of suspects and resolution of cases.
The NFSS aims to collect a thousand DNA samples to build a comprehensive database. This database will be crucial in comparing DNA evidence found at crime scenes, potentially leading to breakthroughs in both current and cold cases.
