By Aaron Humes: The Belize Tax Service is reminding consumers to thoroughly check their receipts when they buy today and tomorrow to ensure they are not wrongly charged General Sales Tax (GST).

A receipt shared with reporters showed a date of November 30, 2024 – two weeks ago.

The goods bought are valued $119.40 with tax of $12.88 for three taxable items, but the tax should be discounted.

As for the errant receipt, which was apparently issued to a member of the BTS staff, the tax men were sent to the store to investigate.

Reports elsewhere such as Dangriga on social media suggest that some stores are still charging GST. They will be investigated and fined by the Tax Service.

The GST-free weekend (plus zero rating for hams and imported turkeys) continues on Sunday as well as next weekend – but not during the week.
