Belize Tax Officers deployed to enforce GST-Free weekend compliance

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Last weekend, Belizeans rushed to stores to take advantage of the first ever GST free weekend implemented by the Government of Belize.

If you missed it, this weekend December 21 and 22, 2024, you can also purchase your groceries tax free.

Following several reports of grocery stores not complying, the Belize Tax Services deployed officers to monitor.

Director General Michelle Longsworth says that the Belize Tax Service officers followed up on those reports.

In addition, Longsworth said that for this weekend, staff will also be out to minimize those issues.

“So basically, our staff is being is focused on this because we want to make sure to minimize any of the issues that arose this weekend for the coming 21st and the 22nd. So based on the reports we’ve received, we are sending out back our staff countrywide to these businesses to ensure that they really understand the process and to assist them with any challenges that they seem to be facing as it pertains to providing persons or consumers with the tax-free days,” Longsworth said.

The Belize Tax Service will also distribute flyers to educate consumers on what are Zero-rated items.
