By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s U-15 Women’s National Volleyball Team enter their final group-stage fixture today, Saturday, 13 December, still chasing their first victory at the 2nd Central American Under-15 Invitational Volleyball Championship in Managua, Nicaragua.

The Belizean girls opened their campaign on Wednesday, 10 December, against Honduras. Despite rallying to take the second set, they eventually fell 3–1 (25–23, 22–25, 25–18, 25–16) as Honduras began strongly.

On Thursday, 11 December, Belize engaged in a demanding five-set contest with Guatemala. They took the first two sets 25–20 and 31–29, but Guatemala fought back to win the next three 25–23, 25–17, and 15–13, handing Belize a narrow 3–2 defeat.

Friday, 12 December, brought another five-set battle, this time against hosts Nicaragua. Belize struck first with a 25–21 win, but Nicaragua responded with back-to-back 25–16 victories. Belize forced a decider by taking the fourth 25–16, only for Nicaragua to close out the match 15–9, leaving Belize with a third consecutive loss.

Meanwhile, Honduras confirmed their dominance by sweeping El Salvador 3–0 (25–16, 25–6, 25–22) on Friday, securing their fourth straight win and guaranteeing first place in the table and a place in Sunday’s final.

Belize now face El Salvador today at 4:00 p.m. local time in their last group-stage match. El Salvador have struggled, losing all three of their matches in straight sets to Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. That record gives Belize the edge in the battle for fourth place.

Should Belize defeat El Salvador, they would secure fourth position and qualify for Sunday’s bronze medal match at 4:00 p.m., where they would meet the loser of tonight’s decisive clash between Nicaragua and Guatemala. The championship final follows at 6:30 p.m. between the top two sides, with Honduras already assured of their place.

If Belize fall to El Salvador, however, they would finish fifth and miss out on the medal round.

The current campaign marks a sharp contrast to last year’s tournament, also held in Managua, where Belize put up a sterling performance to win the silver medal. From December 11-15, 2024, the Belizean girls recorded four victories against one defeat, also claiming four individual awards, with Emaun Marin and Jamielee Espejo earning two each. Their only loss came against eventual champions Costa Rica, who finished unbeaten at 5–0. Belize rebounded with decisive wins over Guatemala and El Salvador to secure second place, while El Salvador took bronze. Honduras, by contrast, ended last year’s event winless at 0–5 — a remarkable turnaround given their 4–0 record this year and guaranteed place in the 2025 final

For the young Belizean side, today’s fixture is not only about pride but also about keeping their hopes alive for a podium finish. Having already shown they can push regional rivals to five sets, victory over El Salvador would be a fitting reward for their determination and growth in Managua.
