By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s U23 Men’s Volleyball Team made a spirited start to their campaign at the 2025 NORCECA U23 Pan American Cup, claiming the opening set against defending champions Mexico before ultimately falling 3-1 (31–29, 21–25, 21–25, 22–25) at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City on Tuesday.
The Belizean side, entering as underdogs, stunned the crowd by edging Mexico in a tense first set. Their aggressive serving and resilient defence paid off as they held their nerve to win 31–29, signalling their intent to compete at the highest level.
Mexico responded with tactical precision, adjusting their block and attack to take the next three sets. Despite the loss, Belize remained competitive throughout, pushing Mexico to the limit in each frame.
The match opened Group B play, which also includes the Dominican Republic and the United States. Belize will face the Dominican Republic next, aiming to build on their spirited performance.
The tournament runs through August 3.
