By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Men’s National Team are resting during the day on Wednesday in preparation for their first match in the second Concacaf Nations League (CNL) C triangular against Anguilla at 8:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) is hosting this month’s triangular from October 9-15.
Last month, Belize defeated both Anguilla and Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) in the first triangular in their hopes of regaining a spot in the Concacaf League B, from where they were relegated last year due to poor performances under the tutelage of Spanish coach David Pérez.
Under new coach, Belizean Charlie Slusher, Belize topped the CNL C round robin held in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, in September, beating Turks and Caicos Islands 4-0 and Anguilla 1-0. They need to repeat those wins on home soil to secure the top spot, which will guarantee their return to the superior League B.
After Wednesday’s Belize-Anguilla match, action continues on Saturday, October 12, when Turks and Caicos Islands face Anguilla at 8:00 pm. The triangular closes with Belize taking on Turks and Caicos Islands on Tuesday, October 15, at 8:00 pm.
Currently, Belize have six points, Anguilla have three, and TCI have none.
Not only will Belize return to the Concacaf League B if they win the group, but they will also advance to the Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims, where they will face a League A team.
While Group B plays here in Belize this month, simultaneously Group A will play at the Wildey Turf in Wildey, Barbados, and Group C at Warner Park Football Stadium in Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Group A comprises Barbados (6 points), Bahamas (3), and the US Virgin Islands (0), while Group C consists of St. Kitts & Nevis (6 points), Cayman Islands (3), and the British Virgin Islands (0).
