Belize sweeps Honduras 3-0 to earn 5th-place shot at U23 Central American Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s U23 men’s volleyball team continued its impressive run at the VII AFECAVOL U-23 Central American Championship in Chiriquí, Panama, sweeping Honduras 3–0 (25–22, 25–20, 25–15) to qualify for the fifth-place playoff against El Salvador .

The match, played at Gimnasio La Basita in Chiriquí, Panama, capped a strong second-round performance for Team Belize, who rebounded from a tough group-stage draw to assert their dominance at the net and in transition play.

Group A Drama: Three-Way Tie Settled by Sets

In Round One, Group A ended in a rare three-way tie, with Belize , Panama , and Guatemala each finishing with one win and one loss. Final standings were determined by points earned and sets won/lost:

Despite identical win-loss records (1–1), Panama topped the group with 6 points, followed by Guatemala with 5, and Belize with 4, due to the number of sets won and lost.

Belize’s Net Control and Scoring Depth

Against Honduras, Belize outperformed in every major category, showcasing superior attack, block, and serve execution:

Kaelen Ingram led all scorers with 21 points (17 attack, 2 block, 2 serve), followed by Eleazar Mejía with 14 (12 attack, 2 block). Musa added 7 points, Butler chipped in 4, and Richardson, Sutherland, Barber, and Usher each contributed 1–2 points to round out Belize’s balanced offense.

Honduras’ top scorer was Montes with 17 points (14 attack, 3 block), but the team struggled to generate consistent pressure and fell behind early in each set.

What’s Next

Regardless of the final outcome, Belize’s back-to-back wins over Guatemala and Honduras have displayed the team’s resilience, tactical growth, and rising talent. The fifth-place playoff offers a final opportunity to cement their standing and close the tournament on a high note.
